Located at Wesley Children's Hospital in Wichita, KS, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a Level II Trauma center dedicated to providing critical care for the region's most vulnerable patients. The unit operates with a compassionate, high-acuity environment, supported by a dedicated team of 38 staff members including Intensivists, RNs, Respiratory Therapists, and Case Management.
The team functions around the clock to manage complex pediatric cases, maintaining a strict 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio during day shifts to ensure the highest standard of care. The unit is known for its teaching hospital culture, where experienced staff mentor new hires and foster a collaborative atmosphere focused on patient outcomes and professional growth.
As a Registered Nurse in the PICU, you will be the primary advocate for pediatric patients requiring intensive monitoring and life-support interventions. This role is designed for a skilled professional who thrives under pressure and excels in a fast-paced, teaching-oriented environment. You will manage a caseload of critically ill children, performing essential procedures such as IV starts, blood draws, and TPT placements while utilizing advanced equipment like CPN and Meditech EMR systems.
Your day will involve close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive care, ranging from acute stabilization to family support. Candidates selected for this 13-week contract will undergo a specialized onboarding process to ensure readiness for the unit's unique demands. This includes completing the PICU RN Exam and successfully passing the PICU RN Skills Checklist. The role requires a minimum of one year of current acute care hospital PICU RN experience, along with active BLS and PALS certifications.
