TravelNurseSource is partnering with Cynet Health to locate a qualified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse for a 13-week contract in Parkersburg, West Virginia. This role offers a unique opportunity to work within a specialized unit dedicated to MedSurg and Infectious Disease care.
The unit features 18 private rooms, a necessity for managing patients with infectious conditions such as COVID, MRSA, and C-Diff. The team structure typically includes 3-4 RNs per shift, supported by two CNAs and a 24/7 charge nurse who also maintains a full patient assignment during night shifts. While remote telemetry monitoring is available, RNs are not required to interpret strips. The environment demands strong knowledge of isolation precautions and common MedSurg diagnoses, with a focus on managing titratable medications (excluding cardiac drips).
Travel nursing in this setting provides a distinct professional landscape. It challenges nurses to refine their patient advocacy skills when navigating diverse populations and complex infectious disease protocols. The experience broadens your understanding of holistic care, as different regions may incorporate alternative medicine practices. For those with a sense of adventure, this assignment offers the chance to explore West Virginia while immersing yourself in a new healthcare environment. Additionally, the role fosters essential time management skills through the logistics of adapting to new units and managing assignments, while potentially offering opportunities to participate in community health education initiatives.
To apply, candidates must submit an unexpired copy of their driver's license. The unit requires specific certifications including BLS, ACLS, Pharmacology, and completion of a Skills Checklist and Specialty Exam. Candidates must possess travel experience and proficiency with the EPIC electronic health record system.
The onboarding process includes one day of orientation with a preceptor, with independence expected by the third day. The contract allows for block scheduling subject to unit needs, with a cancellation policy permitting two shifts per 13-week assignment. Travelers may be required to float to other MedSurg units and work holidays if permanent staff cannot cover.
Scrub color is strictly royal blue; scrub jackets are permitted but must be royal blue, while hoodies or sweat jackets are prohibited. Shifts run 12 hours (0700-1930 or 1900-0730) with a 30-minute lunch break. The schedule includes every other weekend (Friday through Sunday) and potential holiday coverage.
