The Transportation Worker 4 Mechanic serves as an advanced-level specialist within the District Ten Equipment Shop in Mercer County. This position is critical to the West Virginia Department of Transportation's (WVDOT) mission of planning, constructing, maintaining, and regulating over 35,000 miles of state roads. As a working shop leader, you will not only perform complex repairs and maintenance on heavy highway equipment but also mentor lower-level mechanics, ensuring the fleet remains operational and safe.
You will be responsible for major overhauls of gasoline and diesel-powered machinery, troubleshooting intricate electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, and fabricating parts from blueprints. The role demands a high degree of technical proficiency, including the ability to road test equipment after repairs and inspect the work of junior staff. This is a hands-on position that may involve hazardous working conditions, inclement weather, and irregular hours, including shifts, weekends, and overtime without prior notice.
Selected applicants will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through this program is based on completed hours, demonstrated proficiency, and training milestones. A key requirement for advancement is maintaining or obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employment.
Candidates must possess five years of paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing gasoline or diesel vehicles/equipment, along with graduation from an approved auto/diesel college or a current passing certificate in any three ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) exams. No substitutions are allowed for these requirements.
The WVDOT is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse workforce.
