The System Administrator serves as a critical pillar for our infrastructure, ensuring the effective provisioning, installation, configuration, and maintenance of both hardware and software systems. This role is not merely about keeping the lights on; it is a position dedicated to technical research and development that drives continuous innovation within our operational environment.
You will be the guardian of the systems that power our core capabilities, specifically the Linux and Windows environments supporting our GIS infrastructure, as well as the systems underpinning our Asset Management applications. Your work directly enables our staff, volunteers, and partners to function efficiently by ensuring that all system components adhere to our organizational values and standards.
Your day will be a dynamic blend of engineering, operations, and strategic maintenance. You will engineer solutions for specific project needs, installing and rebuilding servers while configuring hardware, storage, and directories to meet rigorous standards. Beyond the initial setup, you will maintain a proactive stance on system health by performing daily monitoring, verifying the integrity of key processes, and conducting regular security scans to identify potential intrusions.
A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to ensuring data resilience through daily backup operations, file archival, and the creation of recovery media. When issues arise, you will act as the final line of defense, providing Tier III support to troubleshoot complex hardware or software failures and coordinating communication with impacted teams. You will also drive optimization by applying OS patches, tuning system performance, and managing data center environmental monitoring equipment.
Candidates for this role will be evaluated on their ability to navigate complex problem-solving scenarios where decisions have noticeable department-wide effects. The selection process will assess your technical judgment, your capacity to provide guidance on complex technical issues, and your flexibility to adapt to working conditions that may occasionally require evenings or weekends with little advanced notice.
We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where diverse backgrounds and perspectives are valued. This role offers the opportunity to work in a setting that prioritizes technical excellence and continuous improvement, supporting a mission that relies on the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners.
