This provisional appointment places you within the Support Unit of the Operations Division at the Boston Police Department. As a critical component of the department's 24-hour emergency communications center, the Support Unit ensures the seamless flow of information between field units, the public, and internal databases. The environment is fast-paced and high-pressure, featuring individual workstations in a larger room with frequent background noise, operating around the clock across three shifts.
The Emergency Communications Specialist – Support Analyst serves as a mission-critical liaison for the Boston Police Department. You will function as the primary point of contact for police field units, the general public, and external agencies. Your day involves a dynamic rotation through specialized sections, including the tow section, missing person section, warrants section, stolen car section, and Channel 8 – Nova Base.
In this role, you will manage the recording, searching, and verification of critical records in Department databases and national systems like NCIC and CJIS. You will answer digital radio requests from officers regarding warrants, criminal records, and vehicle checks, while also serving as the main telephone receptionist for the department. The position requires maintaining constant monitoring of radio systems and telephones, responding immediately to field requests, and ensuring the accurate entry and removal of data. You will also assist the public in locating towed vehicles and audit records to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and department protocols.
This position is deemed essential, requiring personnel to report to work during emergency situations and adverse weather conditions. Applicants must be Boston residents. The selection process includes a criminal record check, pre-employment drug test, physical evaluation, and hearing and vision testing.

A minimum of two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid clerical experience in a customer service-related position using basic office equipment, including but not limited to a digital telephone system, computer, fax, and copy machine.
