Founded in 1895, Union Settlement is an East Harlem-based nonprofit organization and a pioneer of the settlement house movement. For over 128 years, we have provided critical and innovative programming to children, youth, families, and older adults. Today, our organization operates through 33 program sites across approximately 28 locations, serving more than 10,000 individuals and nearly 1,000 businesses annually.
Strengthened by a dynamic, diverse, and collaborative workforce of over 350 employees, Union Settlement acts as a connector, convener, and advocate for East Harlem. Our mission is to empower New Yorkers to gain opportunities, develop skills, and achieve their dreams through our core program areas, which include Early Childhood Education, Youth Services, Family Services, and Adult Education.
The Summer Classroom Aide supports the Youth Development & Opportunity department in delivering a transformative summer experience. Our program is designed to provide participants with learning opportunities, mentorship, and creative self-expression to build self-confidence and broaden worldviews. We aim to offer services often inaccessible to our community, including computer classes, specialized high school preparation, arts enrichment, tutoring, and consistent physical education.
In this role, you will be an integral part of a fast-paced, engaging environment where you help facilitate weekly lesson plans and assist Group Leaders in workshops ranging from STEM and performing arts to sports and leadership. You will help prepare participants for quarterly showcases and performances, ensuring a supportive atmosphere that challenges youth to help others and engage with their schools and community.
Note on Additional Opportunities: Eligible and qualified candidates may be hired prior to the summer camp commencement to work in our active After School programs. This allows you to earn additional wages and gain experience in roles such as Activity Specialist, Tutor, or Group Leader. Please inquire about these opportunities during your phone screen or interview.
Interested candidates should apply through our official channels. The interview process typically includes a phone screen to discuss qualifications and availability, followed by an in-person interview. During these stages, candidates are encouraged to ask about potential early-hire opportunities for our After School programs.
