The Student Support Associate (Behavior Focus) at Excelsior Middle School is a vital member of the Linn-Mar Community School District team dedicated to fostering an inclusive, safe, and supportive learning environment. This role exists to bridge the gap between individual student needs and the general education classroom, ensuring that students with diverse abilities can thrive academically and socially.
In this position, you will work directly under the guidance of classroom teachers and building administrators to support students with a wide range of conditions, including behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, and physical challenges. Your day-to-day impact involves facilitating the goals outlined in each student's Individual Education Program (IEP), helping students develop independence, and managing behavior to minimize disruptions. You will be the constant presence that helps students navigate the school day, from personal hygiene and mobility to participating in field trips, assemblies, and specialized therapies.
More than just supervision, this role is about building rapport and self-esteem. You will model positive behaviors, use reinforcement strategies to encourage appropriate conduct, and help integrate students into the broader classroom community. Whether assisting with small-group instruction, preparing specialized materials, or ensuring health and safety during emergencies, your contribution is essential to creating a culture where every student feels valued and capable of success.

Experience working with students. Experience in school special education department or related experience. Experience working with behavior and learning challenged students. American Heart or Red Cross Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification for adult, child and infants including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and barrier devices. American Heart or Red Cross First Aid certification. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training.
