This position serves as a critical leader within the Structural Maintenance department, responsible for planning, supervising, and coordinating personnel and activities involved in the inspection, maintenance, and construction of the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) infrastructure. The role exists to ensure the safety and reliability of the system's physical assets, managing a vast network that includes 52.3 miles of elevated structure, 115 bridges and viaducts, and 150 rail stations.
In this capacity, you will oversee the full lifecycle of structural repair projects, from initial design and cost estimating to fabrication and construction. You will act as a key liaison between the CTA Steel Fabrication Shop, external consultants, contractors, and governmental agencies. The role requires balancing technical precision with operational efficiency, optimizing repair designs to be both cost-effective and constructible while maintaining strict compliance with safety standards.
Your day will likely alternate between the office and the field. In the office, you will prepare detailed structural design analysis, sketches, and specifications for deteriorated elements, while reviewing work assignments to ensure adherence to established standards. You will also manage the department's policies and assist in the development of capital construction programs.
On-site, you will navigate the CTA right-of-way, walking elevated structures, ballast, and subway tunnels in various weather conditions to conduct inspections and repair audits. You will inspect the fabrication of structural components and monitor construction activities to ensure they meet the rigorous requirements of the American Railway Engineering Association (AREMA), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and American Concrete Institute (ACI).
