About the Role
This Split Shift Custodian position serves both South Hadley High School and Michael E. Smith Middle School for the 2026-2027 school year. The role is dedicated to providing students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient environment where they can learn, play, and develop. The primary mission is to maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence, ensuring full educational use of the facilities at all times.
Day in the Life
Working Monday through Friday from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the custodian ensures the buildings remain secure and pristine. Responsibilities include sweeping classrooms, dusting furniture, vacuuming rugs, and cleaning corridors after school hours. The role involves daily sanitation of restrooms, disinfecting fixtures, and washing windows to maintain a welcoming atmosphere.
Security and safety are paramount; the custodian checks exit doors and panic bolts during occupancy, operates the flag, and assumes responsibility for opening and closing the building. Duties extend to minor building repairs, moving furniture for activities, and conducting periodic inspections of electrical installations. During winter months, the role includes shoveling, snow blowing, and sanding walks and steps. The position also requires operating specialized equipment such as floor machines and snow blowers, and complying with local laws for waste disposal.
Hiring Process
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. and a valid Massachusetts driver's license. Prior experience as a school custodian is preferred. Notably, Middle School Custodians must hold a Pool Operator Certification. The hiring process evaluates the ability to work effectively within a large custodial team and to comprehend verbal and written instructions. Alternatives to standard qualifications may be considered at the discretion of the Director of Facilities.
