The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. As a critical component of the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department maintains a highly skilled staff dedicated to the reliability and security of the region's power infrastructure.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, bridging the gap between internal operations and external stakeholders, including interconnection customers and CAISO. You will oversee aspects of system and substation protection, control, and remedial action schemes (RAS) specified and installed by PG&E. The role involves specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid capacity, you will collaborate with diverse teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Your day-to-day work includes developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, conducting system modeling, and maintaining documentation. You will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while managing complex assignments that require integrating information from various sources.
PG&E is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E values diversity and inclusion, fostering an environment where a highly skilled staff can thrive while maintaining the stability of the region's energy grid. We are an equal opportunity employer dedicated to building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
