The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network, a critical asset for the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC). Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to provide rigorous oversight of these protection systems and safeguard the region's power infrastructure.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, interfacing with interconnection customers and CAISO. You will oversee aspects of system and substation protection, control, and Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) specified, installed, and owned by PG&E. The role involves specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
Day-to-day, you will collaborate with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Your responsibilities include developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, conducting system modeling, maintaining documentation, and auditing protection equipment. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will provide technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while acting as a second tier of support for complex projects that require integrating information from diverse sources.
This is a hybrid role, requiring you to work from your remote office and your assigned location two days a week.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
