The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. The team manages approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages and ages. Located in a strategic position within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), PG&E operates an extensive 500kV network that provides critical stability to the region. Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to ensure the reliability and security of these protection systems.
This position serves as a key technical leader for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will be responsible for specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will collaborate with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. You will also act as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). Your day-to-day work involves developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, conducting system modeling, maintaining documentation, and auditing protection equipment. As a Subject Matter Expert, you will provide technical mentorship to less senior engineers and manage complex assignments that require integrating information from diverse sources.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis depending on specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
