The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. Located in a strategic position within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department relies on a highly skilled staff to maintain the reliability of the region's power infrastructure.
This position serves as a critical hub for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections. The role involves developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and maintaining documentation and audits of protection equipment.
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will provide technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while acting as a second tier of support. You will coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, serving as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. This role requires integrating information from diverse sources to resolve complex problems and architect complete systems with limited guidance.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, and geographic location. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
This is a hybrid position. Successful candidates will work from their remote office and their assigned location two days per week.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, religion, gender, or other protected characteristics.
