The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. Located strategically within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department relies on a highly skilled staff to maintain these critical infrastructure assets.
This position serves as a key technical leader for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections. The role involves developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and maintaining documentation and audits of protection equipment.
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will collaborate with diverse teams including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. You will also act as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. This role requires providing technical mentorship to less senior engineers and managing multiple internal and external clients.
This position operates on a hybrid model, requiring work from your remote office and your assigned location two days per week.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis considering specific skills, education, experience, market value, and geographic location. Successful candidates are also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
