The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. The team manages approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages and ages. Located in a strategic position within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), PG&E operates an extensive 500kV network that provides critical stability to the region. Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to ensure the reliability and security of these protection systems.
This position serves as a key technical leader in System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical mentorship to less senior engineers and serving as a second tier of support. Your day-to-day involves performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and developing testing procedures. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, serving as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. This role requires collaborating with diverse teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis depending on specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We consider qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or other protected characteristics.
