The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. Located strategically within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department relies on a highly skilled staff to maintain the reliability of this critical infrastructure.
This position serves as a key technical leader in System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical mentorship to less senior engineers and serving as a second tier of support. Your day-to-day involves performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and developing testing procedures. You will coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, acting as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. Collaboration is central to this role, requiring close work with teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis considering specific skills, education, experience, and market value. Successful candidates are also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, gender, or other protected characteristics.
