The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network, a critical asset within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC). Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to provide rigorous oversight of these protection systems and ensure the reliability of the region's power grid.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, interfacing with interconnection customers and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). You will oversee aspects of system and substation protection, control, and remedial action schemes (RAS) specified, installed, and owned by PG&E. The role involves specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to guarantee the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid capacity, you will collaborate with diverse teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Your day-to-day responsibilities include developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, conducting system modeling, maintaining documentation, and auditing protection equipment. You will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while managing multiple internal and external clients.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis considering specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
