The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. Located strategically within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department relies on a highly skilled staff to maintain the reliability of this critical infrastructure.
This position serves as a key technical leader in System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will be responsible for specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will collaborate with multiple internal teams—including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test—as well as serve as the primary point of contact for interconnection customers and CAISO. Your day-to-day work involves performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, developing testing procedures, and maintaining documentation. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide technical mentorship and oversight to less senior engineers.
PG&E is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. Candidates selected for this role will be placed within the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, and geographic location. The company offers a competitive compensation package, including eligibility for discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
