The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. The team manages approximately 35,000 relays of varying vintages and ages. Located in a strategic position within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), PG&E operates an extensive 500kV network that provides critical stability to the region. Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to ensure the continued oversight and reliability of these protection systems.
This position serves as a key technical leader for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections. The role involves developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and maintaining documentation and audits of protection equipment.
You will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical mentorship to less senior engineers and serving as a second tier of support for complex problems. This role requires collaboration with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Additionally, you will serve as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).
This position operates on a hybrid model, requiring you to work from your remote office and your assigned location two days per week. The role is based in California, with specific locality considerations for compensation.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We consider qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or other protected characteristics.
