The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. The team manages approximately 35,000 relays of varying vintages and ages. Given PG&E's strategic location within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC) and its extensive 500kV network that provides regional stability, maintaining a highly skilled staff is critical to ensuring the reliability of these protection systems.
This position serves as a key technical leader for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will be responsible for specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will collaborate with diverse teams including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. You will act as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. Your day-to-day involves performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, developing testing procedures, and maintaining documentation. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, providing technical mentorship to less senior engineers and acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for various operations systems areas.
PG&E is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. Candidates selected for this role will be placed within the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of specific skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, and geographic location. The company offers eligibility for discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
