The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. Located in a strategic position within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department relies on a highly skilled staff to maintain the reliability of the region's power infrastructure.
This position serves as a critical hub for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will be responsible for specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will collaborate with diverse teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. You will act as a primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. Your day-to-day involves performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, developing testing procedures, and maintaining documentation. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, providing technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while managing complex assignments with broad scope.
PG&E is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. Candidates selected for this role will be placed within the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, and geographic location. Successful candidates may also be eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
