The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. As a critical component of the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department maintains a highly skilled staff to provide rigorous oversight of these essential protection systems.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, interfacing with interconnection customers and CAISO. You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections. The role involves developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and maintaining documentation and audits of protection equipment.
Collaboration is central to this position. You will work closely with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will provide technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while managing complex assignments that require integrating information from diverse sources.
This is a hybrid role, requiring you to work from your remote office and your assigned location two days a week.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis considering specific skills, education, experience, and market value. Successful candidates are also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
