The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. Located strategically within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department relies on a highly skilled staff to maintain the reliability of the region's power infrastructure.
This position serves as a critical hub for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections. The role involves developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and maintaining documentation and audits of protection equipment.
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will act as a second tier of support for less senior engineers and provide technical mentorship. You will collaborate closely with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Additionally, you will serve as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO, coordinating information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies.
This is a hybrid role, requiring you to work from your remote office and your assigned location two days a week.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis depending on specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
