The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network, which is critical to the region's power grid within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC). Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to provide rigorous oversight of these complex protection systems.
This position serves as a strategic point of contact for System Protection, interfacing with interconnection customers and CAISO. You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections. The role involves developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and maintaining documentation and audits of protection equipment.
You will collaborate closely with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will provide technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while managing multiple internal and external clients. This hybrid role requires working from your remote office and your assigned location two days a week.
Candidates will be evaluated based on their technical expertise in system protection engineering, ability to resolve complex problems, and experience with protection schemes. The selection process focuses on integrating knowledge from various sources to architect complete systems and provide high-level support for RAS schemes.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a diverse workforce and fostering an inclusive culture where all employees can thrive.
