The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. Located in a strategic region within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department relies on a highly skilled staff to maintain the reliability of these critical infrastructure assets.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, interfacing with interconnection customers and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). You will oversee aspects of system and substation protection, control, and remedial action schemes (RAS) specified, installed, and owned by PG&E. The role involves specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid capacity, you will collaborate with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Your day-to-day responsibilities include developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, conducting system modeling, maintaining documentation, and auditing protection equipment. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, acting as a technical mentor and subject matter expert for less senior engineers.
PG&E is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. Candidates selected for this role will be placed within the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, and geographic location. The company estimates that successful candidates will typically be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
