The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a large geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. The team manages all aspects of 35,000 relays of various vintages and ages. Located in a strategic area of California and within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), PG&E operates an extensive 500kV network that provides stability to the region. Maintaining a highly skilled staff is critical to ensuring the reliability of these protection systems.
This position serves as a key technical leader for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers. Your day-to-day involves performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and developing testing procedures. You will coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, serving as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. This role requires close collaboration with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
