The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. The team manages approximately 35,000 relays of varying vintages and ages. Located in a strategic position within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), PG&E operates an extensive 500kV network that provides critical stability to the region. Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to ensure the continued oversight and reliability of these protection systems.
This position serves as a key technical leader for System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will be responsible for specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will collaborate with diverse teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. You will act as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. Your day-to-day involves performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, developing testing procedures, and maintaining documentation. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, providing technical mentorship to less senior engineers and acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for various operations systems areas.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis considering specific skills, education, experience, market value, and geographic location. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
