The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. The team manages approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages and ages. Given PG&E's strategic location within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC) and its extensive 500kV network that provides regional stability, maintaining a highly skilled staff is critical to ensuring the reliability of these protection systems.
This position serves as a key technical leader in System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will be responsible for specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will collaborate with diverse teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. You will act as a primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and CAISO. Your day-to-day involves performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, developing testing procedures, and maintaining documentation. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies while providing technical mentorship and oversight to less senior engineers.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range, with the final decision made on a case-by-case basis considering specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to building a diverse workforce and fostering an inclusive culture where everyone can thrive.
