The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. Situated in a strategic location within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department relies on a highly skilled staff to maintain the reliability of these critical infrastructure assets.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, bridging the gap between internal teams and external stakeholders, including interconnection customers and CAISO. You will oversee aspects of system and substation protection, control, and remedial action schemes (RAS). Your work involves specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will collaborate closely with multiple internal teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. The day-to-day scope includes developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, conducting system modeling, maintaining documentation, and auditing protection equipment. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, acting as a technical mentor and subject matter expert for less senior engineers.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, experience, and market value. The position is eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, religion, gender, or other protected characteristics.
