The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network, a critical asset for the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC). Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to provide rigorous oversight of these protection systems and safeguard the region's power infrastructure.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, interfacing with interconnection customers and CAISO. You will oversee aspects of system and substation protection, control, and Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) specified, installed, and owned by PG&E. The role involves specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid capacity, you will collaborate with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Your day-to-day responsibilities include developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, conducting system modeling, maintaining documentation, and auditing protection equipment. You will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while managing complex assignments that require integrating information from diverse sources.
PG&E is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. Candidates selected for this role will be placed within the estimated salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, experience, and market value. Successful candidates may also participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
