The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network, a critical asset for the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC). Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to provide rigorous oversight of these protection systems and safeguard the region's power grid.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, interfacing with interconnection customers and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). You will oversee aspects of system and substation protection, control, and Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). Your work involves specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid role, you will collaborate with diverse teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Day-to-day responsibilities include developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, conducting system modeling, maintaining documentation, and auditing protection equipment. You will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while managing multiple internal and external clients.
PG&E is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. Candidates will be evaluated based on their technical expertise, experience in system protection, and ability to solve complex engineering problems. The selection process typically involves reviewing qualifications against the role's requirements, followed by interviews with hiring managers and team members to assess technical fit and cultural alignment.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
