The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. The team manages approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages and ages. Located in a strategic position within the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), PG&E operates an extensive 500kV network that provides critical stability to the region. Maintaining a highly skilled staff is essential to ensure the reliability and security of these protection systems.
This position serves as a key leader in System and Substation Protection and Control, as well as Remedial Action Schemes (RAS). You will specify, design, and apply protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections. The role involves developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and maintaining documentation and audits of protection equipment.
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will provide technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers while acting as a second tier of support. You will collaborate closely with multiple internal teams, including EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Additionally, you will serve as the primary point of contact for System Protection regarding interconnection customers and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).
This is a hybrid role, requiring you to work from your remote office and your assigned location two days per week.
Candidates selected for this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, and geographic location. The position is also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
