The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems installed across a vast geographic area of California, owned by PG&E. Managing approximately 35,000 relays of various vintages, the team ensures the stability of PG&E's extensive 500kV network. As a critical component of the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC), the department maintains a highly skilled staff dedicated to the reliability of the region's power infrastructure.
This position serves as a pivotal point of contact for System Protection, interfacing with interconnection customers and CAISO. You will oversee aspects of system and substation protection, control, and remedial action schemes (RAS). The role involves specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure the reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
In this hybrid capacity, you will collaborate with diverse teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, Planning, and Relay Test. Your day-to-day work includes developing testing procedures, performing fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, and maintaining documentation. You will also coordinate information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies, acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers.
PG&E is committed to a fair and transparent hiring process. Candidates selected for this role will be placed within the salary range based on a case-by-case evaluation of their specific skills, education, licenses, experience, market value, and geographic location. The company believes the successful candidate will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, though final decisions are made individually.
PG&E is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, gender, age, religion, disability, or veteran status.
