You will serve as a Senior Litigation Paralegal supporting the Department of Justice's Environment and Natural Resources Division. This client-facing position is critical to the division's work on Fifth Amendment takings cases, with a primary focus on Rails to Trails liability and valuation trials. You will partner closely with attorneys to manage complex factual and legal research, document analysis, and trial support, ensuring the integrity and efficiency of high-stakes litigation.
The role involves a dynamic mix of investigative work and courtroom preparation. You will travel to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and other sites to collect historical documents, maps, and public records. A significant portion of your day will be dedicated to analyzing title and deed data, utilizing GIS tools to identify parcels on historical maps, and assisting contractors with mapping efforts. You will also play a key role in the discovery process, managing document production, indexing exhibits, and preparing detailed reports on case progress and research findings.
Beyond research, you will provide direct support during depositions and trials, including preparing exhibits, tracking case files, and assisting attorneys in the courtroom. The position requires maintaining meticulous records that may be used for written or verbal testimony regarding your research and conclusions. This position requires a minimum clearance of DOJ MBI and U.S. citizenship. The hiring process involves a review of qualifications, including a paralegal certificate or equivalent legal training, and verification of the ability to obtain the required security clearance. Experience as a Title Examiner or a background in real estate records (property law). In-court trial support experience. Experience with automated litigation support tools such as Relativity, Trial Director, OnCue, etc. Experience working with expert witnesses. Familiarity with GIS tools valued, e.g., ESRI mapping software. Ability to travel, generally no more than 10% of the time.
