Under the general direction of the Laboratory Director, this position serves as a critical link in the diagnostic continuum. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical procedures to generate the data necessary for health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of medical conditions. The role is dedicated to enhancing the quality of patient care and service through rigorous interdepartmental cooperation and adherence to quality assurance protocols.
A typical day involves verifying that the correct specimens are being analyzed for the right patients and performing the appropriate tests. You will judge the adequacy of specimens submitted for testing and analyze clinical samples using standard methods approved by the Laboratory Director. A significant portion of the role is dedicated to ensuring data integrity through quality control procedures, utilizing test reference ranges for neonates, pediatrics, and adults to determine result reasonableness, and validating results through parameter correlation.
You will also be responsible for releasing or reporting results in strict accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. This includes confirming all Critical Values prior to release and performing routine preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration on assigned instruments. Additionally, the role involves training laboratory assistants and other Clinical Lab Scientists on proper techniques and providing general or direct supervision of Lab Assistants and Clerical Personnel as required by lab law and regulations.
