This Senior Archaeologist position is based in Coolidge, AZ, serving the Bureau of Indian Affairs San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP). The role focuses on National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) compliance for irrigation and power facilities operating across Pinal, Pima, Maricopa, Graham, and Gila counties. The service area encompasses two Indian Reservations and diverse off-reservation communities, ranging from rural to densely populated areas.
You will plan, organize, and direct the cultural resource management program, ensuring strict adherence to Section 106 of the NHPA, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), and NAGPRA. This position serves as a critical liaison for government-to-government consultations with State Historic Preservation Officers, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and Indian Tribes. You will provide high-level expertise to support federal management officials in complex decision-making and project management.
Your day-to-day involves managing routine to complex consultations, developing cultural resource sections for major Environmental Impact Statements and Assessments, and evaluating site eligibility for the National Register. You will also conduct field inventories in remote locations and extreme heat, review third-party archaeological reports, and negotiate agreement documents to resolve adverse effects.
This role requires the ability to design and conduct pedestrian field surveys independently in extremely hot conditions and remote locations. The work environment exposes employees to prevailing weather conditions and elements. While reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities, the position demands physical capabilities including walking, balancing, stooping, and the ability to adjust vision for close and distance work. Travel across the project area for onsite inventories and evaluations is required.
