Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. They are dedicated to protecting people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. This community operates in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are essential.
As a Master-at-Arms, you will provide a visible law enforcement presence and conduct force protection patrols on installations, piers, and aboard ships. Your day-to-day duties may include standing sentry, controlling access to secure areas, and performing inspections for weapons or contraband. You will enforce traffic regulations, investigate incidents, and manage crowds during emergencies.
The role offers significant variety and growth. You may specialize in areas such as military working dogs, harbor security, corrections, investigations, or protective services. Over time, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially qualifying for specialized billets like patrol supervisor, watch commander, or investigator. You will work closely with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners depending on your assignment.
Assignments span Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aircraft carriers, and expeditionary security units. You will work primarily on bases, piers, flight lines, and in patrol vehicles, kennels, and security operations centers. The role requires frequent duty in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 coverage. You may face stressful situations involving emergencies or criminal activity, requiring calm decision-making. Opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours are common, often counting as sea duty for rotation.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn basic law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Career development is progressive, involving on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. You will have opportunities to attend advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, or Criminal Investigator. Career-long development includes leadership courses and warfare qualifications.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, and eligibility for a security clearance. You must also meet medical, vision, and dental standards, as well as physical fitness requirements suitable for armed law enforcement duties.
Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss current incentives, eligibility, and the application process. Reserve opportunities may exist for qualified prior-service or SELRES applicants, often requiring specific training or NECs. Actual opportunities depend on Navy needs, individual performance, and current policy.
The U.S. Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
