Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. Whether stationed on bases, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed in expeditionary environments, MAs ensure force protection and physical security through patrols, access control, and investigations. The role offers a dynamic career path where Sailors can specialize in diverse fields such as military working dogs, harbor security, corrections, investigations, or protective services.
This is a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical career where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. MAs work in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to provide 24/7 coverage. The environment often involves high-stress situations requiring calm decision-making and strong communication during emergencies or criminal incidents. As you progress, you will undergo continuous qualification and requalification in weapons, use of force, and tactical skills. Responsibility increases over time, offering opportunities to advance into specialized billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, kennel master, or investigator.
Assignments vary widely, ranging from Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas to aircraft carriers and expeditionary security units. Daily work takes place on bases, piers, flight lines, harbor security boats, and in patrol vehicles, kennels, and security operations centers. The role offers opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours that count as sea duty. MAs work in close integration with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners, depending on the specific billet.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Career development is progressive, driven by on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. Advanced schools are available to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) in areas like Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, and Criminal Investigator. The Navy supports career-long growth through leadership courses, warfare qualifications (such as ESWS, EAWS, or NWS), and senior enlisted leader programs.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a high school diploma, and specific age, medical, and character requirements. Eligibility for a security clearance is mandatory for most billets. If you are a prior-service Sailor from another rating, conversion into the MA community may be possible based on community needs and screening. For Reserve opportunities, qualified prior-service or SELRES applicants may be considered, often requiring completion of MA "A" School or equivalent training.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status. We are committed to building a diverse force that reflects the nation it serves.
