Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. Whether stationed on bases, aboard aircraft carriers, or deployed in expeditionary environments, MAs ensure force protection and physical security. The role offers a dynamic career path where Sailors can specialize in diverse fields such as military working dogs, harbor security, corrections, investigations, or protective services.
This career operates in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are paramount. MAs must be prepared for frequent duty in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to maintain 24/7 security coverage. The role involves exposure to high-stress situations, from emergencies to criminal activity, requiring calm decision-making and strong communication skills. As you progress, you will undergo ongoing qualification and requalification in weapons, use of force, and tactical skills, taking on increasing responsibility as you qualify for specialized billets like patrol supervisor, watch commander, or investigator.
Assignments vary widely, ranging from Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas to aircraft carriers and strategic weapons facilities. You will work primarily on bases, piers, flight lines, and in security operations centers, often integrating closely with Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners. The role offers opportunities for overseas, forward-deployed, and dependent-restricted tours that count as sea duty, providing a unique blend of land and maritime security experiences.
The journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Career development is progressive, featuring on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. Advanced opportunities allow for specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications, such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, Corrections Specialist, and Criminal Investigator. Throughout your career, you can pursue leadership courses, warfare qualifications, and senior enlisted leader programs to further your professional growth.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific age, medical, and character requirements. Eligibility for a security clearance is essential for most billets. Interested candidates should contact an official Navy recruiter to discuss current incentives, confirm eligibility, and navigate the application process. Reserve opportunities may also exist for qualified prior-service members or SELRES applicants, often requiring specific training or follow-on schools.
