Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing access control posts and investigating incidents, MAs ensure safety in diverse environments ranging from bases and ships to expeditionary units.
This role is designed for individuals who thrive in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment. You will be responsible for enforcing regulations, responding to emergencies, and maintaining order during special events. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially specializing in areas such as military working dogs, harbor security, corrections, investigations, or protective services.
Life as a Master-at-Arms involves frequent duty in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to provide 24/7 coverage. You will work in a high-stakes environment where attention to detail, sound judgment, and professionalism are essential. The role requires exposure to stressful situations involving emergencies or criminal activity, demanding calm decision-making and strong communication skills.
Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard aircraft carriers, and with expeditionary security units. You may find yourself working on flight lines, harbor security boats, in patrol vehicles, or within security operations centers. The role often involves close integration with other security forces, Marine units, NCIS, and joint or host-nation partners.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. Career development is continuous, with opportunities for advanced schools that award specialized Navy Enlisted Classifications, such as Military Working Dog Handler, Harbor Security Coxswain, or Criminal Investigator.
Advancement includes leadership courses, warfare qualifications, and senior enlisted leader programs. Reserve opportunities may exist for qualified prior-service members or SELRES applicants, often requiring specific training or follow-on schools. Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may also have the opportunity to convert into the MA community based on needs and screening.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. Eligibility for this role typically requires U.S. citizenship or legal residency, a clean legal history suitable for armed law enforcement duties, and the ability to meet strict medical and physical fitness standards.
To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including age limits, test scores (such as the ASVAB), and character standards. Specific qualifications, including security clearance eligibility, will be reviewed by a recruiter. For the most current information on incentives, bonuses, and specific program requirements, please contact an official Navy recruiter or consult authoritative Navy sources.
