What to Expect

This career demands a high level of professionalism in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment. The role involves frequent duty in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 security coverage. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility, qualifying for specialized billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, or investigator, all while maintaining rigorous standards in weapons handling, tactical skills, and physical fitness.

Work Environment

Assignments vary widely, taking you to Navy installations in the U.S. and overseas, aboard ships, or with expeditionary security units. You will work primarily on bases, piers, flight lines, and in security operations centers, often integrating closely with Marine units, NCIS, and joint partners. The role offers opportunities for overseas and forward-deployed tours that count as sea duty, providing a unique blend of land and maritime security experiences.

Training & Advancement

Your journey begins with Recruit Training followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB, where you will master the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, and antiterrorism. Career development is progressive, built on on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. You will have access to advanced schools to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications in specialized fields like Military Working Dog Handling, Harbor Security, or Criminal Investigation. Long-term growth is supported by leadership courses, warfare qualifications, and senior enlisted leader programs.

Hiring Process & Application

To join the Master-at-Arms community, you must meet general enlistment standards, including U.S. citizenship or eligible residency, a high school diploma, and specific medical and physical fitness requirements. Most billets require eligibility for a security clearance and a clean legal history suitable for armed law enforcement duties. Prior-service Sailors from other ratings may be able to convert into MA based on community needs.
