Master-at-Arms (MA) Sailors form the backbone of the Navy's security, antiterrorism, and law enforcement capabilities. Their mission is to protect people, installations, ships, and strategic assets both at home and abroad. From conducting force protection patrols on piers to managing corrections and investigations, MAs operate in diverse environments ranging from aircraft carriers and expeditionary units to strategic weapons facilities.
This role exists to ensure the safety and security of Navy operations through a combination of policing, physical security, and specialized tactical skills. MAs are the first line of defense, responsible for controlling access to secure areas, inspecting vehicles and personnel, and responding to emergencies with calm judgment and professionalism.
You will work in a fast-paced, armed, and safety-critical environment where attention to detail is paramount. The role demands a commitment to 24/7 coverage, meaning you will frequently work rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays. You will face stressful situations involving emergencies, accidents, or criminal activity, requiring strong communication and decisive action.
Career growth is built on continuous qualification. You will undergo ongoing training in weapons handling, use of force, and tactical skills. As you advance, you will take on increasing responsibility, potentially qualifying for specialized billets such as patrol supervisor, watch commander, Military Working Dog Handler, or Criminal Investigator.
Your journey begins with Recruit Training, followed by Master-at-Arms Class "A" School at Lackland AFB. Here, you will learn the fundamentals of law enforcement, weapons handling, antiterrorism, and security operations. From there, you will report to an operational security force billet at an installation, ship, or expeditionary unit.
Advancement is driven by on-the-job qualification through Personnel Qualification Standards and unit training. The Navy offers extensive opportunities for advanced schooling, allowing you to earn Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs) in areas like Harbor Security, Corrections, and Protective Services. Career-long development includes leadership courses and warfare qualifications tailored to your specific command.
The Navy is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or genetic information. We are committed to building a diverse force that reflects the nation we serve.
