The Department of Business and Industry's Division of Industrial Relations is seeking a Safety Specialist for the Mine Safety and Training Section (MSATS) in Winnemucca. This role is critical to the mission of reducing the frequency and severity of mine accidents through rigorous safety and health training for miners and operators, as mandated by Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) Chapter 512.
As a Safety Specialist, you will serve as a frontline advocate for workplace safety across surface and underground mines, mills, quarries, and related facilities. Your work involves a dynamic blend of field inspections, technical consultation, and investigative rigor. You will identify hazards and regulatory violations, recommend practical solutions to improve compliance, and respond to accidents and fatalities with thorough documentation and analysis.
Your day will likely begin with fieldwork, conducting safety and health inspections that require navigating uneven, steep, or sloping terrain and working in confined, wet, or poorly illuminated underground environments. You will perform industrial hygiene surveys, including air quality evaluations, noise dosimetry, and electrical safety tests.
Beyond the field, you will provide technical assistance to mine operators, helping them navigate complex state and federal regulations. You will lead training sessions on accident prevention, first aid, and mine rescue, and you will draft detailed investigative reports following accidents or incidents. When necessary, you will issue violation notices, close orders for imminent dangers, and testify in federal penalty hearings or civil court proceedings regarding site conditions.
