AECOM is seeking passionate, customer-focused talent for Overnight and Evening Safety Service Patrol Operator positions in Virginia Beach and Hampton, VA. Reporting directly to the Safety Service Patrol (SSP) Supervisor, you will play a critical role in safeguarding motorists traveling the interstates.
Our SSP program operates 7 days a week, 365 days a year, serving a vital function in the delivery of safety and mobility to the motoring public. As part of a 24/7/365 operation center, you will ensure roadways are clear of debris, report highway maintenance issues, and assist stranded motorists. You will engage in direct public and multi-agency communications, establishing temporary traffic control for emergency responders and detecting incidents to ensure safe and incident-free lane changes.
You will be equipped with special highly visible, reflective uniforms and drive specially marked vehicles to provide essential roadside assistance, including tire changes, fuel delivery, jump starts, and directions. This role requires physical agility to work in outdoor environments with variable conditions, including heat, cold, and noise, as well as the ability to operate heavy equipment and lift significant weight.
Candidates selected for this position must successfully complete certification training and pass functional tests for each essential function identified. The hiring process includes a State and Federal criminal history/security background check, a Virginia Department of Transportation fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC), and a pre-employment drug screen. Selected individuals will also participate in a mandatory random drug screening process and a monthly MVR monitoring program.
Important Onboarding Requirement: To support our commitment to a secure recruitment process, all newly hired employees are required to attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment. This position is located on-site at client locations and is not remote.

Five (5) years of driving experience. Prior Safety Service Patrol Operator experience. Knowledge/experience of incident management techniques. Radio and telecommunications experience. Possess or be able and willing to obtain CPR certifications. Basic competency in using computers such as laptops, smart pads. Working knowledge of basic automotive repair. A positive customer service attitude. Geographic familiarity with regional freeway system and arterial roads.
