National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is a certified DBE/WBE firm and the most trusted name in the railroad industry for providing qualified field safety staff and safety training. Serving the continental United States, Canada, and Mexico, NRSS is dedicated to delivering proven safety records for Class 1 Railroads, Regional Short Lines, Transit Systems, State DOTs, and various contractors.
As a Roadway Worker In Charge (RWIC), you will serve as the critical link ensuring safety and coordination on active railroad job sites. This role exists to enforce federal, state, and railroad-specific policies while managing on-track safety in accordance with 49 CFR 214 regulations. You will lead daily operations by providing clear job briefings to all personnel, coordinating with dispatchers and train crews, and resolving rule violations immediately. The RWIC is responsible for maintaining a culture where no job is so urgent that safety is compromised, ensuring the wellbeing of employees, customers, and communities.
Your work will take you to diverse field environments across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, often requiring travel for extended periods. You will navigate complex rulebooks, synthesize information to make sound decisions under pressure, and maintain meticulous records of daily activities. Success in this role requires the ability to adapt quickly to changing site conditions, communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, and demonstrate initiative in identifying and mitigating safety risks before they occur.
Candidates selected for this position must successfully pass pre-employment and recurrent background checks, drug and alcohol testing, and complete required classroom training. The interview process will assess your technical knowledge of railroad engineering and safety, as well as your ability to handle the physical and environmental demands of the field.
At NRSS, safety is our way of life. We are committed to placing safety first in every task we perform. We are an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.
