The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) serves as a vital link in patient care, providing intermediate monitoring and treatment for individuals who require a higher level of attention than a general medical-surgical unit but do not yet need the intensive resources of an ICU. This role is dedicated to delivering critical care to patients recovering from surgery, medical procedures, or acute conditions, ensuring their progress is meticulously tracked and their health status is managed proactively.
In this position, you will work collaboratively with a dedicated healthcare team to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients. Your day-to-day involves conducting comprehensive assessments of patients with moderate to high acuity, continuously evaluating vital signs, lab results, and cardiac rhythms to identify potential risks such as arrhythmias or respiratory distress. You will administer complex treatments, including IV medications and blood products, while managing patients with challenging conditions like heart failure and diabetes.
Beyond clinical duties, the PCU RN plays a key educational role, guiding patients and their families through recovery processes, treatment plans, and necessary lifestyle changes to prevent readmissions. You will also serve as a resource to less experienced staff, participating in mentoring initiatives and upholding the highest standards of safety, infection control, and quality improvement within the unit.
