This position is critical to the safe and efficient movement of heavy materials within shipyards and aboard vessels. The Rigger serves as the vital link between ground operations and crane operators, ensuring that cargo booms, elevators, and other heavy equipment are rigged, lifted, and positioned with precision.
In this role, you will navigate the dynamic environment of a shipyard, working at heights and within confined spaces. Your day involves selecting the appropriate rigging gear—such as cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, and blocks—based on the specific weight, distribution, and size of the load. You will be responsible for testing and installing rigging equipment, including cargo booms and portable davits, while managing the logistical flow of materials on and off ships.
Communication is a cornerstone of this position. You will convey precise instructions to crane operators and forklift drivers using hand signals, loudspeakers, or telephone to guide the movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings. The role demands a high level of physical dexterity and situational awareness, requiring you to climb scaffolds, crawl through small openings, and handle heavy rigging materials while exposed to industrial noise, fumes, and moving machinery.
