The Marine Mammal Center advances ocean health through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation, research, and education. Leading the field in ocean conservation, the organization combines veterinary medicine, science, and education to support marine life. The Response Dispatch team operates within this mission, serving as the critical first point of contact for the public reporting marine mammals in distress. This team works in a dynamic, fast-paced environment to coordinate rescue operations and educate the community, ensuring that every call is handled with empathy and precision.
The Response Dispatch Intern plays a vital role in advancing the Center's mission by managing the stranded animal response hotline and providing logistical support to onsite operations at the Sausalito hospital. This position is designed for individuals who are calm under stress, possess excellent people skills, and thrive in a collaborative team environment.
In this role, you will answer calls from members of the public reporting marine mammals in distress, triage incoming reports, and collect accurate location and animal assessment data. You will serve as an educator, informing callers about marine mammals and the Center's operations while representing the organization positively. Beyond the phone, you will provide administrative and logistical support to staff and volunteers coordinating response and animal transports, ensuring the smooth execution of rescue efforts.
The work environment is high-energy and often emotional, requiring the ability to stay polite and composed during complex interactions with passionate public callers. You will work in an open office space with frequent distractions, utilizing various online tools to communicate with staff, volunteers, and the public. The role may also involve occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions and assisting with the physical logistics of animal transport.
To apply for this internship, please submit a cover letter and resume. Your application must include a brief description of how your experience aligns with the role; applications without a cover letter will not be considered. In your cover letter, you are welcome to note which pronouns you use (e.g., she/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/theirs).
The Marine Mammal Center is committed to embracing diversity within the organization, believing that diverse teams achieve the best outcomes and provide the most effective support to the communities served. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive, equitable, and supportive work environment where people can thrive together. We strongly encourage people from underrepresented groups, including people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, veterans, parents, and individuals with disabilities, to apply. The Center is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes everyone to the team. If you need reasonable accommodation at any point in the application or interview process, please let us know.
