The Registered Respiratory Therapist serves as a critical clinical resource within the hospital, reporting to the shift supervisor or manager. This role is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases and illnesses, ensuring patients receive expert care through the setup and operation of specialized medical equipment.
In this position, you will administer respiratory-specific gases and medications, manage various modes of therapy for compromised patients, and respond to medical emergencies throughout the facility. A key component of the role involves analyzing and advising on arterial blood gas results, while also providing education to patients and their families on the use of respiratory equipment in home environments.
You will act as a vital resource for nurses, physicians, residents, interns, and other hospital staff regarding the initiation and operation of respiratory procedures. The role may also involve assisting in the transport of mechanically ventilated patients, taking verbal and telephone orders from physicians, and participating in the ordering of department supplies. In the absence of the Respiratory Supervisor, you may assume a Charge role.
Beyond direct patient care, you will actively participate in departmental in-service and education programs, Quality Assurance initiatives, and OSUMC committees. The work schedule includes alternating weekends and holidays.
