About the Residency Program
We are seeking 3Ls and recent graduates sitting for the July 2026 or February 2027 Bar exams to join our Residency Program in our California offices (Oakland or San Jose). This role is designed for candidates who plan to reside in the state where they are applying.
The program serves as a bridge between law school and professional practice. After sitting for the Bar exam, residents will receive specialized training in substantive family law and courtroom advocacy. You will be mentored by the MFL Learning & Development department and experienced legal teams to ensure a successful transition to an Associate Attorney position upon passing the Bar.
Day in the Life
MFL offers a unique remote-first setting with brick-and-mortar space available for in-person requirements by courts and clients. As a resident, you will thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, managing multiple responsibilities with attention to detail. You will work as part of a respectful, growth-oriented team, eager to learn, practice, and incorporate feedback.
You will have the opportunity to develop litigation skills as a first chair early in your career, managing direct client contact and cases involving divorce, child custody, and financial support. The firm provides access to cutting-edge technology to manage your caseload and communication, along with ongoing learning and development support. We offer transparent advancement tracks and leadership opportunities, with a low billable hours requirement of 100 per month for Associate Attorneys.
Hiring Process
To apply, candidates must submit a cover letter, law school transcript, and responses to the candidate questionnaire. We look for individuals who are proactive in studying, building confidence, asking questions, and completing assignments to prepare for handling client matters from start to finish.
